AI data center development in Patagonia

Overview

The Patagonia region of Argentina is developing into a strategic hub for artificial intelligence infrastructure. Global companies are drawn to the area by its cold climate, which lowers cooling costs, and its access to diverse energy sources, including wind, hydroelectric, and shale gas from the Vaca Muerta formation.

Significant projects are currently being explored, including a potential $25 billion clean-energy initiative titled ‘Stargate Argentina’ involving OpenAI and Sur Energy. Pampa Energía has also been studying a facility in Neuquén near the Loma de la Lata thermal plant that could consume up to 500 MW of power.

Expanding on these developments, Pampa Energía president Marcelo Mindlin announced at Argentina Week in Paris that the company has 800 MW of electrical generation available to supply AI data center projects in the Vaca Muerta region. Mindlin stated that the company possesses both the “necessary energy and land” to develop large-scale data centers, aiming to leverage existing resources to meet rising industry demands. As Argentina’s largest private power generator, Pampa Energía’s assets in Neuquén include the 780 MW Loma La Lata thermoelectric plant and the 285 MW Pichi Picún Leufú hydroelectric dam.

While the administration of President Javier Milei seeks to bolster the investment climate through reforms and tax incentives, the broader economic context remains complex. Argentina’s export-driven model, fueled by record-breaking hydrocarbon and grain production, aims to generate foreign currency to service external debt, even as the domestic economy faces difficulties importing necessary machinery and equipment.
