Peru's Pataz province sees armed clash over illegal mining; dialogue table set up in Caravelí

On July 9, residents in Pataz province, La Libertad region, reported an armed confrontation between alleged illegal miners linked to a group called “Lombriz” and Peruvian military forces near the Francés River. Preliminary accounts said the exchange of fire resulted in suspected fatalities, injuries and arrests, though official confirmation was still pending. The province remains under a state of emergency as authorities continue operations to regain control of the area and curb illegal gold extraction.

In a separate development, the community of Estrella de Oro and the Caravelí mining company have established a dialogue table aimed at addressing mining‑related tensions and fostering cooperation between local residents and the mining sector.
