Pataz province, Peru sees rise in illegal‑mining violence and community outreach

An explosive attack on the Santa María unit of Minera Poderosa in Pataz province injured two workers and caused material damage. The National Society of Mining, Oil and Energy (SNMPE) demanded stronger government security measures, warning that criminal groups linked to illegal mining are attempting to turn the area into a “zona liberada” and continue to target formal mining facilities despite a declared state of emergency.

Minera Poderosa also sponsored the 11th District Student Leaders Meeting in Suyubamba, bringing together 47 student representatives from nine secondary schools and 12 teacher advisors. The event featured workshops on leadership, interculturality and continuous improvement methods, aiming to strengthen school‑community ties and promote inclusive education.

Both incidents illustrate the contrasting challenges and initiatives surrounding mining activities in Pataz, where security concerns coexist with corporate efforts to support local development.
