Paterna officials seek memory site status for Paredón de España

The PSPV-PSOE political party held a ceremony at the Paredón de España in Paterna to honor victims of Francoist repression and deceased socialist militants. During the event, which included floral offerings and laurel wreaths, local leaders emphasized the site's historical significance as a location where numerous executions occurred during the dictatorship.

Juan Antonio Sagredo, the Mayor of Paterna and Senate candidate, announced that the City Council will initiate a formal process to request that the Spanish Government declare the Paredón de España a Lugar de la Memoria (Place of Memory). This move aims to secure legal recognition and protection for the site to prevent its destruction. Sagredo noted that since 2015, the local administration has opened over 80 mass graves and recovered more than 1,600 bodies.

Pilar Bernabé, the party's candidate for Congress in Valencia, spoke about the lasting impact of the repression and the poverty faced by families following the Civil War. Additionally, the event included calls for exiled individuals to be granted the right to vote in the upcoming elections on November 29.
