Spanish democratic memory site designations

Overview

Efforts to recognize historical sites of repression in Spain have continued through late 2026. In Tarragona, the Ministry of Territorial Policy and Democratic Memory officially designated the former Pilats prison, located in the Torre del Pretori, as a Site of Democratic Memory. The facility, which operated as a provincial prison until 1953, saw approximately 6,900 inmates between 1939 and 1948, during which more than 60 inmates died due to inhumane conditions.

In Paterna, local officials from the PSPV-PSOE party held a ceremony at the Paredón de España to honor victims of Francoist repression and deceased socialist militants. Following the event, the Mayor of Paterna announced that the City Council will formally request the Spanish Government to declare the Paredón de España a Lugar de la Memoria. This initiative seeks legal recognition and protection for the site, which has been linked to numerous executions. Local administration reports that since 2015, they have opened over 80 mass graves and recovered more than 1,600 bodies.
