Patras First Municipal Cemetery joins European cultural heritage map

The First Municipal Cemetery of Patras has been included in the Cultural Route of European Cemeteries for 2025 and has become an official member of the Association of Significant Cemeteries in Europe (ASCE). This recognition highlights the site's historical and cultural importance, enhancing the international profile of Patras.

To mark this achievement, the Municipality of Patras is organizing a ceremony on Monday, September 28, at 5:30 PM within the cemetery. The event will include the unveiling of a commemorative plaque and the unveiling of a sculpture titled ‘In the Place of My Heart’, donated by sculptor Aimilia-Gioula Giannopoulou. The ceremony will feature musical performances by the Thanasis Tsipinakis String Night Orchestra, conducted by Vagia Zepato.

Established in 1880 following a decision by Mayor Athanasios Kanakaris-Roufos, the cemetery is located in the Zavlanio area. The site serves as a historical record of the city, featuring various landmarks such as the Church of the Angels and the Church of Agia Paraskevi. Its hills contain graves linked to the 1821 Revolution and notable historical figures, including Benizelos Roufos.
