Patras to unveil commemorative plaque and sculpture at 1st Municipal Cemetery

The Municipality of Patras will host a cultural event at the 1st Municipal Cemetery to celebrate its inclusion in the European cultural heritage map. The ceremony will feature the unveiling of a commemorative plaque marking the cemetery's 2025 induction into the Association of Significant Cemeteries in Europe (ASCE).

During the event, a donated sculpture titled ‘In the place of my heart’ will also be unveiled. Created by sculptor Emilia Gioula-Giannopoulou from Mani marble, the piece depicts an anatomically correct heart emerging from a marble mass. The artist, who has roots in Patras, intended the work as a symbol of eternal memory and an aesthetic contribution to the cemetery where her ancestors are buried.

The ceremony will include representation from the ASCE and musical performances by the ‘Thanasis Tsipinakis’ Chamber Orchestra of Strings.
