Dom Rui Manuel Sousa Valério, Patriarch of Lisbon, visited Brazil and presided over a Mass at the Cathedral of São Sé on 26 July. Accompanied by Cardinal Odilo Scherer and local clergy, he took part in the VIII Latin American Meeting of Monfortian Spirituality, celebrating 60 years of the order’s mission in the continent and emphasising the centrality of Christ in the Montfortian charism.
In Salvador, Cardinal Dom Sergio da Rocha welcomed Dom Paulo Jackson Nóbrega de Sousa, Archbishop of Olinda and Recife, and his accompanying bishops and vicars. The delegation attended a Mass at the Cathedral‑Basilica of the Holy Savior, toured historic shrines such as the Basilica of Our Lady of the Conception of the Beach and the Basilica of the Good Lord Jesus of Bonfim, and participated in a lecture on Brazil’s primatial diocese. The visit coincided with the 475th anniversary of the Diocese of Salvador and the upcoming 350th anniversaries of both Salvador’s archdiocese and that of Olinda‑Recife.
