Brazil Catholic Church pastoral activities
Overview
In late July 2026, the Patriarch of Lisbon, Dom Rui Manuel Sousa Valério, travelled to Brazil to preside over a Mass at São Sé Cathedral as part of the VIII Latin American Meeting of Monfortian Spirituality. Accompanied by Cardinal Odilo Scherer and local clergy, he celebrated 60 years of the order’s mission in the continent and visited historic shrines in Salvador.
During this period, Cardinal Sergio da Rocha of São Salvador da Bahia hosted Archbishop Paulo Jackson Nóbrega de Sousa of Olinda-Recife and his delegation. The visit included a Mass at the Cathedral-Basilica, tours of notable basilicas such as Senhor Bom Jesus do Bonfim, and a lecture on Brazil’s primatial diocese. The events coincided with the 475th anniversary of the Diocese of Salvador and upcoming 350th anniversaries for both the Salvador and Olinda-Recife archdioceses. To strengthen leadership, Cardinal da Rocha appointed two new episcopal vicars: Father Manoel Filho for the Pastoral area, and Father Danilo Pinto for Culture, Education, and Communication.
In August 2026, Cardinal da Rocha celebrated 25 years of his episcopate with a Thanksgiving Mass at the Basilica Cathedral of the Most Holy Savior, attended by over 30 bishops. He also conducted a Missionary Pastoral Visit to the Santos Cosme e Damião Parish in the Liberdade neighborhood to engage with parishioners and strengthen local leadership.
