Pattaya resort call center used for 600 million won fraud scheme
The Seoul Metropolitan Police Agency has apprehended 10 members of an organized crime group that operated a fraudulent call center out of a resort in Pattaya, Thailand. The group is accused of defrauding 22 small businesses of approximately 600 million won through a sophisticated ‘no-show fraud’ scheme.
The perpetrators impersonated employees of public institutions, such as the Korea Institute of Nuclear Nonproliferation and Control, to place large orders for equipment. They would then claim that certain items needed for the order were unavailable and instruct the victims to purchase them from a third-party shell company controlled by the scammers. Victims, who lost an average of 50 million won each, were tricked into transferring funds to fraudulent accounts.
To facilitate the crimes, the group used a two-step process: first, they targeted individuals who had lost money on illegal gambling sites, promising to help recover losses through insurance companies to steal their personal information and bank account details. Investigations revealed that the group included members of organized crime syndicates. While 8 members have been detained, the ringleader remains at large and is currently being pursued by authorities.
