Call center fraud operations in Thailand
Overview
Authorities in South Korea and Thailand have targeted organized crime groups operating fraudulent call centers.
In September, the Seoul Metropolitan Police Agency apprehended 10 members of a syndicate that operated a call center from a resort in Pattaya, Thailand. The group utilized a ‘no-show fraud’ scheme, impersonating public institution employees to trick small businesses into transferring funds to shell companies. The group reportedly targeted individuals who had previously lost money to illegal gambling sites to acquire their personal and banking information.
In October, Thai police arrested two suspects, including a Chinese national, following a scam targeting a university student. In this instance, scammers impersonated high-ranking police officers and financial investigators, claiming the victim’s bank account was linked to illegal funds. While the victim lost 1.2 million baht, bank staff intervened to prevent a second loss of 1.3 million baht.
