Ghana's NDC and NPP embroiled in internal election disputes ahead of 2028 polls

Members of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) in the Lower Manya Krobo constituency have submitted a petition to the Eastern Regional Secretariat demanding the immediate removal of Alhaji Sumaila Mahama, the party's regional supervisor of branch elections. The petition alleges violations of party election guidelines, improper composition of election committees, inclusion of ineligible aspirants, unauthorised changes to voter registers and intimidation of members who raised concerns. It calls for Mahama's replacement, suspension of the ongoing branch elections and a formal inquiry to restore confidence in the process.

Within the rival New Patriotic Party (NPP), Sunyani East aspirant Maxwell Mahama is contesting his disqualification from the constituency secretary race, claiming the vetting and appeals procedures were unfair and politically motivated. He has petitioned the party's National Steering Committee for intervention. Former NPP chairman Paul Afoko, now a candidate for party leadership, warned that the NDC is gaining strength and urged the NPP to unite, presenting a "3Rs" agenda – Reunite, Rebuild, Recapture – to return the party to power in the 2028 general election.
