Paul de Greece impersonation scam targets elderly woman in Kalamos
An elderly woman in Kalamos, Greece, successfully avoided a sophisticated telephone scam involving artificial intelligence. The perpetrators impersonated Paul de Greece and his treasurer, claiming the victim had been selected to receive a 26,000 euro grant.
To increase the legitimacy of the fraud, the scammers used a Viber video call to display a face that appeared to be Paul de Greece. However, the victim noticed that while the mouth was moving to simulate speech, there was no accompanying audio, leading her to realize the image was an AI-generated product.
The scammers requested a small upfront deposit of between 280 and 350 euros to facilitate the transfer. Despite the victim's refusal, the perpetrators continued to contact her for approximately one month before she eventually blocked their number. The victim reported that she had no prior contact or relationship with Paul de Greece.
