Paul Lyngdoh evaluates political future amid UDP defection row

West Shillong MLA Paul Lyngdoh of the United Democratic Party (UDP) is evaluating his political future pending a decision from the Speaker of the Meghalaya Assembly. The decision follows a petition regarding eight UDP MLAs who moved to join the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).

Lyngdoh stated he has received interest from both the National People’s Party (NPP) and the BJP but will wait for the Speaker’s ruling on the legality of the defection before making a final choice. The Speaker is currently examining whether the move constitutes a merger or a violation of anti-defection provisions under the Tenth Schedule of the Constitution.

The outcome will determine the UDP’s strength in the Assembly. If the split is not recognized, the UDP will retain its 12 MLAs. If the split is recognized, the party will be left with four legislators, who must then decide whether to remain with the UDP or pursue other political paths.
