Paulo Gonet faces scrutiny after photo with banker Daniel Vorcaro surfaces
The Federal Police (PF) discovered a photograph on the mobile phone of former banker Daniel Vorcaro, owner of Banco Master, showing him alongside Brazil’s Prosecutor General, Paulo Gonet. The image, captured during an event in London in April 2024, depicts the two men in a social setting with drinks and cigars. The discovery has caused significant internal tension within the Federal Public Ministry (MPF) and has led to calls from political opposition for Gonet’s removal.
Messages extracted from Vorcaro’s device, some sent by lawyer Ciro Soares, also contain references to Gonet. The Prosecutor General’s Office (PGR) has confirmed the authenticity of the photograph but maintains that the encounter was “banal” and occurred in the presence of other authorities. Supreme Court Minister André Mendonça has noted that he found no immediate evidence of illegal acts regarding the messages.
The Superior Council of the Federal Public Ministry is scheduled to analyze the communications to determine if a formal investigation into Gonet’s conduct is warranted. This development occurs amidst a broader investigation into Vorcaro, who is accused of orchestrating a multi-billion real financial fraud.
