Pavăl brothers expand retail footprint with Carrefour acquisition and new Dedeman project

The Pavăl brothers, owners of the Dedeman retail chain, are expanding their business footprint through significant acquisitions and new developments in Romania. Following their €823 million acquisition of Carrefour Romania, market research firm YouGov noted that the exit of a major international player like Carrefour may signal challenges within the sector due to new legislation, turnover-based taxes, and fiscal unpredictability.

In addition to the Carrefour deal, the brothers are launching a major investment project in Dumbrăvița, Timiș County. They purchased 14.5 hectares of land from Țiriac Imobiliare to develop a large-scale commercial complex. The project will begin with a Dedeman DIY store covering approximately 21,900 square meters, featuring a greenhouse and drive-in area.

The development will be completed in multiple stages, with the first two phases estimated at approximately €40 million. Future phases include a 17,000-square-meter commercial gallery, a dedicated fast-food building, and over 16,000 square meters of space for various shops, services, and restaurants. The entire complex is expected to provide 1,211 parking spaces.
