A powerful explosion in the historic Plaka district of Athens destroyed a residential building, resulting in the deaths of six people. Among the victims were four American tourists, two couples who were staying in a short-term rental and were scheduled to fly home on Friday. The other two victims were an elderly British man and his Greek wife.

Investigators are focusing on a potential natural gas leak as the primary cause. Evidence suggests the blast may have originated on the second floor, where a gas connection dating back to the 1990s was located. Authorities have seized a gas meter and sections of piping for laboratory analysis at the Polytechnic. While a gas leak is a leading theory, officials are also considering whether the activation of an electrical switch could have triggered the event.

The collapsed structure was approximately 100 years old and lacked a modern load-bearing framework, making it particularly vulnerable. The explosion caused extensive damage to neighboring buildings, shops, and the Church of Saint Catherine. Eftimis Lekkas, president of the Institute for Earthquake Research and Protection (OASP), noted the extreme fragility of the building and called for immediate inspections of other historic structures in the area, noting that 70% to 80% of Plaka's buildings are older constructions.
