Paxos Labs launches PAXGy gold-earning token

Paxos Labs has launched PAXGy, a new token backed by PAX Gold (PAXG) designed to provide exposure to the institutional gold-leasing market. Unlike standard tokenized bullion that merely tracks the price of gold, PAXGy aims to increase in value relative to gold over time by deploying its underlying reserves to vetted institutional borrowers.

The mechanism involves lending the gold reserves through the bullion market, where the returns are intended to accrue to the token's exchange rate. This allows holders to potentially redeem their position for more gold than they initially held. The product is currently live on several platforms, including OKX, X Layer, Uniswap, 0x, and Ether.fi, utilizing Chainlink CCIP for cross-chain messaging and pricing.

Paxos Labs noted that while the product offers a way to access a market previously reserved for institutional players, the returns are not guaranteed. The strategy introduces specific credit, liquidity, and market risks, as the exchange rate depends on borrower demand and the success of the lending strategies.
