PCP announces protest campaign in Madeira against rising costs

The Portuguese Communist Party (PCP) has announced a campaign of protest and advocacy in the Autonomous Region of Madeira, running from September 17 to October 11. The initiative, part of the national program ‘Romper com Injustiças – Novo Rumo para Portugal, Uma Vida Melhor’, aims to denounce current political policies and highlight social inequalities.

The party criticizes the rising cost of living, the degradation of public services, and increasing difficulties in accessing housing. The PCP specifically accuses the Regional Government of failing to use its autonomous powers to curb price increases or ensure the proper adjustment of wages and pensions.

The campaign is set to begin on September 17 at 6:00 PM with a ‘buzinão’ (honking protest) on Avenida do Mar, in front of the Madeira Legislative Assembly, specifically targeting rising fuel prices. Throughout the campaign, the party plans to hold public forums and engage with workers and local populations to contest the privatization of strategic economic sectors and the perceived favoritism toward large economic groups.
