Portugal political parties react to Chega motion of censure
Portuguese political parties are reacting to a motion of censure against the government presented by the Chega party, scheduled for debate in the Assembly of the Republic on September 8.
Leaders of the PSD and PS have criticized the motion. PSD Secretary-General Hugo Soares called the move “completely out of touch with reality,” citing a recent credit rating upgrade by Fitch from 'A' to 'A+' as evidence of economic stability. PS Secretary-General José Luís Carneiro pledged that his party would ensure political stability and avoid chaos, though he declined to reveal the party's specific voting decision.
In contrast, Chega leader André Ventura defended the motion, stating that his party acted because others lacked the courage to address issues of “decency” in democracy. The PCP has also expressed that there are “profound reasons” for the government to be censured, though it refused to align itself with Chega's specific motion to avoid following a “demagogic” agenda. Additionally, the PS has accused the current government of profiting from high fuel prices, claiming over one billion euros in revenue has been generated since 2024.
