Portugal public sector faces wave of strikes and protests in November

Portugal is set to experience a significant wave of industrial action and social mobilization throughout November. Public sector workers, represented by unions such as the STTS and the CGTP-Intersindical Nacional, have scheduled strikes and demonstrations to protest against the Government's proposed 2027 State Budget.

Key labor actions include a national strike on November 20, a large demonstration in Lisbon on November 21, and a concentration in front of the Assembly of the Republic on November 24. Workers are demanding better wages, improved working conditions, and revisions to performance management systems. Additionally, security forces, including members of the PSP and GNR, have protested in Lisbon to demand better remuneration and career reviews.

Beyond labor disputes, social movements are organizing a National Day of Struggle for Housing on November 14. This follows growing public discontent regarding the housing crisis and recent legislative changes in the rental market. Protests are expected to take place across the country, including in Lisbon, Porto, the Azores, and Madeira.
