Okanagan region manages wildfire recovery and service adjustments
The Okanagan region is managing the multifaceted aftermath of recent wildfires, including the Bald Range fire. The Regional District of South Okanagan-Similkameen (RDOS) reported that over 20 regional projects have been delayed or downsized due to the fire, which required approximately 4,000 work hours for emergency response. Proposed delays include water meter installations and wastewater treatment projects, as well as a reduced scope for the Naramata memorial cenotaph relocation.
In response to community needs, the Okanagan Indian Band (OKIB) has called for significant provincial and federal financial assistance to help rebuild homes, farms, and businesses destroyed by the fires. Meanwhile, the South Similkameen Health Centre has expanded its emergency room services by one day to Tuesdays following successful physician recruitment, though services remain below 2025 levels.
Fire prevention and infrastructure improvements continue in the area. The Princeton Fire Department received approval for a $60,000 first phase of a new regional training centre. Additionally, the District of Peachland reported significant achievements through the FireSmart BC program, including nearly $49,000 in resident rebates and hundreds of hours dedicated to property assessments and wildfire mitigation.
