Pedro Sánchez acknowledges Spanish security failure in Ceuta migration crisis
Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez has admitted that Spanish security and intelligence services did not anticipate the scale of the migration events that occurred in Ceuta on July 30 and 31. While authorities had received prior warnings regarding potential border movements, Sánchez stated in an interview with El País that the actual magnitude of the crisis exceeded the expectations of all relevant agencies.
Sánchez emphasized the pivotal role of Morocco in managing irregular migration flows toward Ceuta and Melilla. He noted that cooperation and coordination with Rabat are essential pillars for Madrid in addressing border pressures and combating human smuggling networks. He also defended his government's response, arguing that a more aggressive security crackdown at the border could have led to more severe humanitarian consequences.
Regarding migration policy, Sánchez advocated for organized and legal migration to address demographic challenges and labor needs in the Spanish economy. He stressed the importance of individual assessments for migrants, particularly concerning international protection requests, and highlighted the need to respect legal guarantees and constitutional values.
