Pedro Sánchez backs ex-PM Zapatero amid Plus Ultra probe
Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez said he fully supports former Prime Minister José Luis Rodríguez Zapatero after Zapatero testified before the Audiencia Nacional and his daughters were indicted in the Plus Ultra investigation. Sánchez told reporters in Brussels that Zapatero is calm, he trusts his innocence, and he offers personal empathy to the former leader’s family.
Sánchez also addressed domestic policy, stating that Spain will present its 2026 budget and that the next general election will be held in 2027. He ruled out an early election in 2026 and said there will be no combined municipal or regional elections. The prime minister added that the decision about whether Zapatero should return the jewelry he received while in office will be left to the former premier.
