Ceuta migrant crisis: Pedro Sánchez targets 2026 for stability
Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez has addressed the ongoing migrant crisis in Ceuta, stating his expectation that the situation will be stabilized by the end of 2026. Sánchez emphasized the necessity of maintaining a pragmatic and positive relationship with Morocco to facilitate the return of migrants who do not qualify for asylum.
Sánchez also dismissed allegations that Morocco is using information obtained via the Pegasus spyware program to blackmail him, characterizing such claims as ‘Netflix-style’ hoaxes. He further denied that Moroccan security forces were passive during the mass influx of migrants in late July, asserting that intelligence services provide formal reports rather than warnings via WhatsApp.
The crisis has drawn sharp criticism from political opponents. Juanma Moreno, President of Andalusia, accused the central government of ‘arrogant indolence’ regarding the situation. Meanwhile, Juan Jesús Vivas, President of Ceuta, has called for border control to remain strictly under Spanish and European jurisdiction rather than Moroccan influence. To support the region, the Spanish government plans to inject 80 million euros into Ceuta’s economy before the end of 2026.
