Pedro Sánchez heralds Spain’s record economic growth and low unemployment

Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez told a press conference at the Moncloa Palace that Spain has been the fastest‑growing major European economy for almost three years. The European Commission raised its 2026 growth forecast for Spain to 2.6%, and Sánchez highlighted that the country has added 621,000 jobs year‑on‑year, bringing total employment to 22.5 million and pushing the unemployment rate below 10% – the lowest level in 18 years.

He pointed to strong job creation in information‑technology, telecommunications and scientific‑technical sectors, a 58% rise in permanent contracts and a reduction of eleven points in temporary employment. Sánchez also noted a 9% rise in real household income since the pandemic, a 20‑point cut in public debt and a deficit under 3% of GDP. The government attributes part of the success to the energy transition, with renewable capacity rising from 47% in 2018 to 72% today and clean sources now providing 60% of Spain’s electricity mix.
