Spain employment trends and economic growth dynamics

Overview

Spain's labor market continues to show a complex interplay between strong economic growth and seasonal volatility. While the national unemployment rate remains below 10%—the lowest since 2008—the market experienced a seasonal downturn in August 2026, with 162,840 fewer Social Security affiliations compared to July and an increase of 44,419 registered unemployed persons.

Registered unemployment rose by 1.92% in August to reach 2,355,918 people. This seasonal increase, primarily driven by the end of summer contracts and the services sector, marks the lowest August unemployment level since 2007. Despite the monthly rise, the year-on-year trend remains positive, with total unemployment down by 70,593 people compared to August 2025. Sectoral data indicates that agriculture was the only industry to record a decrease in unemployment, while services, construction, and industry saw increases in job seekers.

Regional and municipal impacts vary significantly. In Andalusia, unemployment rose by only 0.64%, marking 64 consecutive months of year-on-year decreases. Extremadura reported a 6.6% annual decline, the second-largest in Spain. Conversely, Galicia saw a 2.2% increase, and Castilla y León experienced a seasonal spike of 2.09%. Locally, León recorded its lowest August unemployment since 2018, while Caudete saw a 2.04% monthly rise in unemployment. In Jerez, employment contracts fell by 15.48% from July, with female employment experiencing a 19.40% monthly drop. Despite these fluctuations, the tourism sector showed strength, with the Valencian Community reporting hotel occupancy rates as high as 92.7%.
