Albania faces political unrest and high-level corruption probes
Albania is facing significant political and social unrest, marked by over 120 days of continuous protests in Tirana. Demonstrators are demanding the resignation of Prime Minister Edi Rama and the establishment of a non-partisan, 12-month transitional technical government. Key demands include constitutional reforms, such as limiting the Prime Minister to two terms and ensuring equality before the law.
Simultaneously, high-level corruption investigations by SPAK have intensified. Former SHISH director Vlora Hyseni was placed under house arrest on allegations of aiding criminal activities and disclosing classified information. These legal developments follow the resignation of former Deputy Prime Minister Belinda Balluku due to procurement investigations.
In regional areas, local tensions are rising. In Maliq, residents of Burimas have repeatedly blocked water infrastructure projects to protect their local supply from being diverted to the village of Zvezde, leading to clashes with police.
Prime Minister Edi Rama has addressed the unrest, noting that current demonstrations carry less risk of fatality than those seen a decade ago. He also commented on singer Dua Lipa’s support for environmental protesters, framing the debate as a conflict between development and conservation.
