Agricultural subsidy and compensation protests

Overview

Agricultural workers and farmers in Greece and North Macedonia have organized protests to demand unpaid subsidies and compensation for production losses.

In Agia, Greece, farmers organized by the United Federation of Agricultural Associations of Larissa Prefecture scheduled demonstrations to demand immediate payment of outstanding compensations from ELGA and the Ministry of Rural Development. Protesters cited an 18-month delay in payments for 2025 cherry frost damage and sought aid for losses caused by heatwaves and frost affecting apples, chestnuts, and walnuts. Livestock farmers also requested compensation for extreme weather events.

In the Pelagonia region of North Macedonia, livestock farmers and agricultural workers scheduled protests regarding unpaid milk premiums and other subsidies. Organizers claim the state owes approximately 600 million denars for unpaid 2025 milk premiums and 500 million denars for early 2026. Protesters also highlighted a significant drop in milk purchase prices and called for increased subsidies.
