Pembrokeshire to replace waste centre booking with numberplate recognition
Pembrokeshire County Council’s Cabinet has approved plans to abolish the current booking system at all six of the region’s waste and recycling centres. The existing system, which was implemented during the Covid-19 pandemic, will be replaced by automatic numberplate recognition (ANPR) and resident vehicle registration.
The modernization aims to provide a more flexible and customer-focused service, addressing public feedback that the current booking requirements are challenging and inflexible. The new ANPR system is intended to maintain resident-only access and prevent third-party commercial waste contractors from using the sites, while ensuring the council retains oversight of site usage.
The transition will occur in two phases. The first phase will involve the Waterloo, Hermon, and St Davids sites. The remaining three sites—Winsel in Haverfordwest, Crane Cross near Saundersfoot, and Manorowen near Fishguard—will be updated during the second phase.
