Pemex platform fire in Campeche's Bay of Campeche
Petróleos Mexicanos (Pemex) reported a fire on the Abkatún-H unmanned satellite platform in the Bay of Campeche on Monday, October 19. The incident occurred at approximately 11:15 local time at an installation located about 73 kilometers from Ciudad del Carmen.
Emergency protocols were immediately activated, involving specialized firefighting vessels and the Regional Emergency Response and Management Group (GRAME). Pemex confirmed that because the platform is an automated, unmanned facility used to collect and direct hydrocarbons, no injuries were reported. The fire was reportedly brought under control after approximately 11 hours of activity.
The company has launched a Root Cause Investigation to determine the exact origin of the fire and assess any potential damage to equipment. This incident follows a recent underwater pipeline leak in the same Abkatún-Pol-Chuc complex reported earlier in October. Analysts have noted that the frequency of such incidents may be linked to maintenance spending, which saw a reduction in the first quarter of 2026.
