Pemex infrastructure incidents in the Gulf of Mexico
Overview
In early October 2026, Petróleos Mexicanos (Pemex) addressed a pipeline leak at the Chuc-1 platform within the Abkatún Pol Chuc complex. The leak, identified after personnel detected iridescence on the sea surface, was repaired by October 6 using a metal clamp and dredging. Subsequent reconnaissance flights by the Mexican Navy and Pemex reported no remaining hydrocarbons on the surface, noting only organic material and sargassum.
On October 19, a second incident occurred at the Abkatún-H unmanned satellite platform in the Bay of Campeche. The fire broke out at approximately 11:15 local time at the automated installation, located roughly 73 kilometers from Ciudad del Carmen. Pemex deployed specialized firefighting vessels and the Regional Emergency Response and Management Group (GRAME) to manage the situation. The fire was brought under control after approximately 11 hours of activity, with no injuries or fatalities reported due to the unmanned nature of the facility.
Pemex has launched a Root Cause Investigation to determine the exact origin of the blaze and assess equipment damage. While preliminary hypotheses suggest the fire may have been related to fuel gas pipelines, analysts have noted that the frequency of such incidents may be linked to a reduction in maintenance spending during the first quarter of 2026.
