Pennsylvania and Meta reach landmark agreement on youth digital safeguards

Pennsylvania Attorney General Dave Sunday has secured a landmark agreement with Meta to implement enhanced digital safeguards for minors. The deal includes more than $500 million for the state and mandates several platform changes designed to assist parents in managing children's technology use.

Key features of the agreement include expanded parental controls, daily screen-time limits, nighttime restrictions, and muted notifications during school hours. Additionally, the settlement introduces stronger age-assurance measures and provides parents with more options to manage content and features.

This development follows growing concerns regarding the impact of excessive screen time on youth. Research indicates that prolonged device use can lead to physical issues such as digital eye strain, musculoskeletal pain, and sedentary behavior linked to obesity. Psychological and developmental concerns, including impaired social skills, disrupted sleep patterns, and reduced attention spans, have also been highlighted as significant risks of unregulated digital consumption.
