Pennsylvania teachers report high stress and financial strain in new survey

A survey of more than 2,000 members by the American Federation of Teachers indicates that Pennsylvania educators are facing high levels of stress, with nearly two-thirds rating their weekly stress at a 7 or higher out of 10. Many teachers reported working second jobs to manage the cost of living, citing rising gas and grocery prices as significant burdens.

Respondents expressed concerns regarding various political and social factors, including the impact of federal policies, the weakening of school funding, and pressures toward the privatization of education. Some educators also noted the impact of book bans and the potential negative effects of artificial intelligence on students’ critical thinking and social skills.

The survey found that 31% of teachers are likely to leave the profession within the next year, and only 36% would recommend the career to their children. In response to retention challenges, Governor Josh Shapiro’s 2026 to 2027 budget includes an additional $10 million for the Student Teacher Stipend Program.
