Pentagon orders academic audits and reviews European military presence

The Pentagon has ordered 30 domestic academic institutions to conduct audits regarding their research relationships with specific foreign partners. These audits aim to examine academic, financial, and research ties to protect public funding from unauthorized technology transfers, intellectual property theft, and exploitation by foreign entities. The review includes contacts identified under the 2019 National Defense Authorization Act and organizations associated with Confucius Institutes. Institutions must submit their findings and action plans by August 31, 2026, to remain eligible for future federal research funding.

Separately, Pentagon Under Secretary of Defense for Policy Elbridge Colby is conducting a review of the U.S. Army's presence in Europe. While recent discussions with defense leaders from Germany, the United Kingdom, Romania, and Italy focused on conventional defense leadership, Colby later addressed Poland's role during a USSTRATCOM symposium. He highlighted Poland as a key ally capable of translating economic success into military effectiveness.
