Pentagon reports $43.6 billion cost for war with Iran

The Pentagon has provided a new official estimate regarding the costs of the conflict with Iran, reporting that the war has cost $43.6 billion to date. This figure includes $11.2 billion in obligated operating expenses for items such as fuel, combat pay, and medical care, alongside $32.4 billion in unfunded replacement costs for damaged aircraft and munitions.

However, critics and congressional officials suggest these figures may be incomplete. Previous estimates from the Congressional Budget Office placed the cost at $38 billion, but noted that the Defense Department had refused to provide necessary data. Observers have pointed out that the Pentagon's current tally may exclude significant expenses, such as $1.5 billion for fuel and the broader economic impacts on the American public.

Simultaneously, U.S. military casualties continue to rise, with the official count of dead and wounded personnel exceeding 850. Recent reports indicate that nearly half of these casualties have occurred since Iran increased its attacks in early July. There are also ongoing concerns regarding the accuracy of official casualty reporting, with allegations that the Defense Casualty Analysis System has previously undercounted service members killed or injured during the conflict.
