Trump renames Lake Ontario as 'Lake America' amid Canada trade war FAST-MOVING
President Donald Trump has signed an executive order to rename Lake Ontario as 'Lake America' within United States federal records. The order directs Interior Secretary Doug Burgum to update the Geographic Names Information System and official federal maps within 30 days. This symbolic move follows a similar 2025 action where the Gulf of Mexico was renamed the 'Gulf of America.'
The renaming occurs amid a significant escalation in trade tensions between the United States and Canada. Following the collapse of recent trade negotiations, Washington imposed 50% tariffs on approximately $20 billion of Canadian imports. In response, Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney announced retaliatory tariffs on U.S. goods, including steel, dairy, and agricultural machinery, set to take effect on September 8.
Canadian officials have rejected the name change. Prime Minister Carney stated that the lake will remain 'Lake Ontario' now and always, noting its 400-year history and Indigenous origins. Because the lake is a shared natural border between New York and Ontario, the U.S. order is unilateral and does not legally compel Canada to adopt the new designation.
