Pentagon reviews U.S. military presence in Europe

The United States is conducting a formal review of its military presence in Europe to determine how the alliance can evolve. U.S. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth has informed NATO member states that the alliance must undergo changes to remain viable, emphasizing that European nations should take greater control over the continent's defense.

Deputy Defense Secretary Elbridge Colby stated in Brussels that the review is not merely about specific bases or locations, but a broader look at the U.S. strategic position. The goal is to accelerate a transition toward a more sustainable and stronger conventional defense led by Europe.

Following an announcement in June, the Pentagon has been surveying NATO members regarding defense spending, procurement, and alignment with U.S. foreign policy priorities. The Secretary of Defense is expected to receive at least four options for proceeding by November 6. NATO diplomats have characterized the initial discussions as positive, noting that European allies appear to be taking more initiative in burden-sharing.
