US Europe troop posture review

In late July 2026 the Pentagon initiated a six‑month Europe Posture Review aimed at shifting the primary responsibility for conventional defence from the United States to NATO allies. The review, announced by Under Secretary of War for Policy Elbridge Colby and Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth, will assess roughly 80,000 U.S. troops, base locations, over‑flight rights and other criteria across Europe.

Early actions cited include the withdrawal of up to 5,000 soldiers from Germany, the termination of a rotational brigade in Romania and the cancellation of an armored brigade deployment to Poland. President Donald Trump has directed an additional 5,000 troops to Poland, though that move has not yet been implemented.

The review will involve consultations with Congress, European governments and U.S. European Command, and coordination with NATO’s Supreme Allied Commander Europe. No specific troop reductions or relocations have been announced, and the process could conclude sooner than the six‑month timeline. The effort reflects the Trump administration’s broader push for allies to assume a larger share of the security burden as U.S. strategic focus turns toward China.
