Penticton encampment cleared following court injunction
Work began on October 30, 2026, to clear an unhoused encampment located off Highway 97 in Penticton, British Columbia. The removal follows a court-ordered injunction granted by Justice Briana Hardwick, which barred the occupation of the highway dedication at the intersection with Fairview Road.
The provincial government initiated legal action in February, citing safety concerns such as fires and the site's proximity to a major intersection. While more than 20 people were initially estimated to be living at the site, the City of Penticton reported that approximately 11 people remained before the injunction took effect.
The City of Penticton stated that emergency shelter space and outreach workers were made available to assist individuals in connecting with housing and support services. The land is under the jurisdiction of the provincial Ministry of Transportation and Transit, meaning city bylaws do not apply to the property.
