Perama Municipality announces 1,000 euro subsidy for newborns
The Mayor of Perama, Giannis Lagoudakos, has announced a municipal subsidy of 1,000 euros for every newborn child born to registered residents of the municipality. The measure is set to be included in the 2027 budget.
The initiative aims to support new families and address the region's demographic challenges. Unlike some programs, this subsidy will apply to every new birth, not just the first child, and will be provided regardless of the family's financial status. The funding will be sourced entirely from the municipality's own resources, as Lagoudakos noted that while national legislation now allows municipalities to provide such subsidies, the central government has not provided corresponding state funding to cover these costs.
The program will be implemented by the municipality's Financial and Social Services, coordinated by the Deputy Mayor of Social Services and Health, Giannis Papagiannakis. Local authorities also highlighted a discrepancy in population data, noting that while there are approximately 50,000 permanent residents, only 26,000 are officially registered voters, a gap that impacts the amount of state funding the municipality receives.
