Perikatan Nasional deregistration sparks tension between PAS and Bersatu
The deregistration of the Perikatan Nasional (PN) coalition by the Registrar of Societies (RoS) has intensified friction between its component parties, PAS and Bersatu. The RoS decision followed a complaint by Bersatu, which alleged it was denied participation in a PN Supreme Council meeting in July.
PAS President Abdul Hadi Awang defended the coalition's management, stating all administration followed its constitution. He suggested the deregistration was an attempt to pre-empt court decisions and reflect government fears. PAS leadership indicated they would continue preparations for the Melaka state election and pursue legal challenges.
Conversely, Bersatu President Muhyiddin Yassin characterized the deregistration as a consequence of leaders failing to act constitutionally. PAS officials noted that while Bersatu may be significantly impacted by the dissolution, PAS intends to focus on potential cooperation with UMNO to secure advantages in the 16th General Election.
