Malaysian political coalition restructuring
Overview
The deregistration of the Perikatan Nasional (PN) coalition by the Registrar of Societies (RoS) has caused significant friction between its primary component parties, PAS and Bersatu. While the High Court has granted a stay on the RoS order pending a judicial review, legal uncertainty persists. PN Secretary-General Datuk Seri Takiyuddin Hassan clarified that the RoS and Ministry of Home Affairs' filing of an appeal does not automatically suspend the High Court's decision, allowing the coalition to continue official business and Supreme Council meetings.
Internal tensions have escalated as parties pursue diverging strategies. Bersatu has questioned the legitimacy of emergency PN Supreme Council meetings, while PAS leadership has maintained its defense of coalition management. Tensions have further intensified following disputes over disciplinary actions against Bersatu for allegedly violating the PN constitution during the Negeri Sembilan election. In response to these disputes, PAS Deputy President Tuan Ibrahim Tuan Man suggested that Bersatu should withdraw from the coalition.
Simultaneously, Bersatu is reportedly planning a new coalition, referred to as ‘PN 2.0’, which may include parties such as Putra, Muda, Berjasa, and a representative for the Indian community. Meanwhile, PAS is working to register a new alliance involving former PN members, including Gerakan, MIPP, and Wawasan. Regarding upcoming elections, Wawasan President Datuk Seri Hamzah Zainuddin stated the party will seek consensus from all PN members regarding candidate participation in the Melaka state elections while the legal matter remains with the courts.
