Perim Island becomes strategic flashpoint in Bab al-Mandab Strait

Perim Island, located in the Bab al-Mandab Strait between the Red Sea and the Gulf of Aden, has emerged as a critical strategic prize in the escalating regional conflict involving Iran, Saudi Arabia, and Houthi rebels.

The island sits at a narrow geopolitical pinch-point where the Arabian Peninsula and the Horn of Africa are only about 12 miles apart. Its importance has grown as Saudi Arabia diverted oil exports through the Red Sea to bypass the Strait of Hormuz.

Houthi rebels, supported by Iran, are reportedly making a push to expand their influence along the Yemeni coast, specifically targeting the port of Mocha located approximately 50 to 80 kilometers north of the island. Control over Perim would grant the Houthis the ability to directly threaten international shipping lanes. Tarik Saleh, Vice President of the internationally recognized Yemeni government, warned that a Houthi takeover of the island would necessitate a massive international military presence to regain control of the strait.
