Conflict over Bab al-Mandab and Perim Island

The strategic importance of Perim Island and the Bab al-Mandab Strait has intensified due to regional conflict involving Houthi rebels, Iran, and Saudi Arabia.

In late August, Major General Khalid al-Qamali of the Yemeni Coast Guard inspected the Al-Ardi site and Perim Island to assess operational readiness and damage caused by Houthi militia attacks. Al-Qamali emphasized the need to secure maritime corridors against smuggling and illegal activities following reports of Houthi boats attempting to approach liberated islands in the Red Sea.

By mid-September, Perim Island emerged as a critical geopolitical flashpoint. As Saudi Arabia has diverted oil exports through the Red Sea to bypass the Strait of Hormuz, the island’s location has become increasingly vital. Houthi rebels are reportedly attempting to expand influence along the Yemeni coast, specifically targeting the port of Mocha. Tarik Saleh, Vice President of the internationally recognized Yemeni government, warned that a Houthi takeover of the island would require a “massive international military presence” to regain control of the strait.
