Perito Moreno glacier retreats nearly 1 km in 100 days

The Perito Moreno glacier in Argentina has experienced a record-breaking retreat, moving approximately 910 meters away from the Magallanes Peninsula in just 100 days. This movement surpasses the previous record of 750 meters documented in 1899.

Monitoring conducted by Glaciarium and the Los Glaciares National Park using drones since May 2025 indicates that the glacier lost 0.65 square kilometers of surface area between February 24 and June 4. When combined with the 0.81 square kilometers lost during the 2025-2026 austral summer, the total reduction reaches 1.46 square kilometers.

Luciano Bernacchi, a director at Glaciarium, stated that the acceleration is likely due to the glacier losing contact with an underwater rock formation, known as a moraine, which previously acted as a natural support. This loss of contact leaves the glacier front more exposed to water dynamics and calving. While the Perito Moreno was historically stable compared to other Patagonian glaciers, significant retreat has been evident since 2018.
