Perito Moreno Glacier retreat in Argentina
Overview
The Perito Moreno Glacier in Argentina is experiencing a record-breaking retreat. Monitoring data from Glaciarium and the Los Glaciares National Park administration indicates that the ice front moved approximately 910 meters away from the Magallanes Peninsula between February and June 2026. This movement, occurring in roughly 100 days, surpasses the previous historical record of 750 meters set in 1899.
During the period from November 2025 to June 2026, the glacier lost a total of 1.46 square kilometers of surface area. This includes 0.81 square kilometers lost during the 2025-2026 austral summer and 0.65 square kilometers lost during the autumn of 2026.
Scientific research led by Moritz Koch, Cristiano Sommer, and Matthias H. Braun highlights a significant increase in the annual descent rate of the frontal surface. The rate rose from 0.34 meters per year between 2000 and 2019 to approximately 5.5 meters per year between 2019 and 2024. To understand these changes, researchers utilized ground-penetrating radar (GPR) and bathymetric surveys in Lago Argentino to reconstruct subglacial bed topography.
While the Perito Moreno was historically viewed as an exception to the recession trends seen in other Patagonian glaciers, significant retreat has been evident since 2018. Luciano Bernacchi, a director at Glaciarium, stated that the acceleration is likely due to the glacier losing contact with an underwater rock formation, or moraine, which previously served as a natural support base. This loss of contact makes the ice front more vulnerable to water dynamics and calving.
