Pernambuco authorities rescue 140 parrots from illegal trafficking
Authorities in Pernambuco, Brazil, have rescued 140 parrot chicks from illegal wildlife trafficking. The birds, identified as Blue-fronted Amazons and Red-lored Amazons, were seized during a joint operation by the Federal Highway Police and Ibama in the municipality of Floresta.
The parrots were being transported in inadequate conditions and were found in a debilitated state. They have been transferred to the Wildlife Animal Triage and Rehabilitation Center (Cetras), a unit of the State Environmental Agency (CPRH).
According to Ivan Vasconcelos, manager of the Fauna Management Unit at CPRH, the birds may require up to two years at the center to recover and learn essential survival skills, such as foraging for food, before they can be reintroduced into their natural habitats.
