Illegal parrot trafficking in Brazil

Overview

Authorities in Brazil have conducted multiple operations to combat illegal wildlife trafficking involving parrot chicks.

In Pernambuco, a joint operation by the Federal Highway Police and Ibama rescued 140 Blue-fronted and Red-lored Amazon parrots in the municipality of Floresta. The birds were found in a debilitated state and transferred to the Wildlife Animal Triage and Rehabilitation Center (Cetras) for recovery and survival training.

In São Paulo, environmental police carried out separate interventions in Franca and São José do Rio Preto. In Franca, officers intercepted a suspect transporting three Blue-fronted Amazon chicks in a backpack, leading to fines and the seizure of a motorcycle. In São José do Rio Preto, an investigation triggered by an anonymous tip regarding sales on a messaging application resulted in the rescue of seven chicks. The rescued birds in São Paulo were sent to either the Wildlife Triage and Rehabilitation Center (CETRAS) or a Municipal Zoobotanical Garden for evaluation and potential release.
