Pernambuco Governor Lyra's Senate Ticket Stalls Amid Rival Claims
Federal deputy Eduardo da Fonte said he was “tranquilo” about the ongoing speculation surrounding Governor Raquel Lyra’s choice for the Senate race in Pernambuco. He cited backing from the state Progressive Union Federation and national party leaders Ciro Nogueira (PP) and Antonio Rueda (União Brasil), asserting that the governor will formalise the candidacy at the appropriate moment.
Lyra’s preferred candidate, former mayor Miguel Coelho, has also been lobbying the governor, posting the word “começou” on Instagram and meeting with party officials. The two aspirants are competing for the Senate slot while the state federation has already endorsed da Fonte. The dispute is set to be addressed at the governor’s party convention scheduled for 2 August, after which the official Senate ticket is expected to be confirmed.
The deadlock reflects broader tensions within Pernambuco’s political alliances as the election calendar approaches, with both candidates awaiting a definitive decision from Governor Lyra.
